About me

Hello,

My name is Dr Helga Abernethy (PhD) and I work with children with sensory processing difficulties that underlies fine and gross motor skill delays and self-regulation difficulties.

I trained and qualified as an Occupational Therapist in South Africa and worked there until 1998 when I came to the UK. Whilst living in the UK I worked in adult community mental health for 15 years.

Since then I have worked with children with sensory processing difficulties and autism. I worked as the lead Occupational Therapist providing specialist treatment for sensory processing difficulties in three schools for autistic children. Over time I gradually expanded my private pratice and am currently self-employed.

I obtained a BSc Psychology Honours degree and a PhD in 'Sensory Modulation Difficulties' at Canterbury University. I completed the Sensory Integration module 1 and 2 courses and the Sensory Integration: Adult and Learning Disabilities course. I am a certified provider of The Listening Program. I have lectured at Canterbury Christ Church University, published in international publications and presented at the London and Birmingham Autism Shows and the OT Show. I have been commissioned by the Autism Education Trust (AET), in conjunction with NHS England, to complete sensory environment assessments in schools across London and to provide recommendations regarding changes in the environment to enhance autistic pupil's experience in maintstream schools.

I now live permanently in Hertfordshire in the UK with my family.
